Orcas Island is part of the San Juan Islands archipelago and is located in Washington State's famous Puget Sound. It is on the Washington State Ferry route and can be reached via either the Anacortes terminal on the Washington State side, or the Sidney terminal on the Canadian side of the Sound. If driving from Seattle, take I-5 north approximately 60 miles to exit 230 just north of Mt. Vernon. Travel west to Anacortes, following the signs to the San Juan Ferries. The ferries are very busy in the summer so be sure to plan on being in line well before the scheduled departure time. Orcas is also served by several commuter airlines. Several whale watching tours are based on Orcas, as are a number of kayak trip operators. Eastsound is the business center of the island and many wonderful restaurants and craft shops are located there. Moran State Park has miles of hiking trails through its old growth forests and fresh water lakes for swimming or fishing. Mt. Constitution is the highest peak in the San Juans and offers magnificent views from Canada on the north, Mt. Rainier on the south and the Olympic Mountains on the southwest.
